This is an unpopular subject even among many ministers and for some it requires a lifetime of reflection before admitting its reality. Satan plants people in the church to prevent evangelism and disciple making! Jesus had to struggle against the Pharisees, Sadducees, chief priests, and scribes constantly in the Temple and the synagogues. When visiting his home synagogue of Nazareth after he began his public ministry, they tried to kill him! What a wakeup call! Jesus could not partner with the synagogues to reach the lost and make disciples! He could not partner with the Temple leaders to reach the lost and make disciples. He taught and ministered at their opposition! He could not work using the organization of the synagogue as a partner in saving souls. What he taught and did in the synagogues angered the leaders and they murmured against him constantly. He tried to work with their leadership, but they constantly refused and finally took part in crucifying him. The religious leaders plotted to kill him during all his ministry. Finally, Jesus told his disciples that what they did to him they would do to them. It took forty days of extended teaching on the kingdom and how it is to work after the resurrection. It took ten days of repentance and decision making for the disciples among one hundred and twenty people to agree that the priority of the church must be evangelism and disciple making! The reality is that if a church is not doing this, it is not their priority regardless of how much they talk about it! If the leadership has no burden for lost people, it will not happen. When the disciples finally understood what Christ wanted to be the focus of his church and agreed to support it, it happened! Today, evangelism diminishes each year in the SBC where I have ministered for the last half century. It is because Satan has successfully planted people in the churches that have bought into religion and the running of “do good” programs that never get anyone saved. Thus, Satan is pleased.....
