A spiritual gift is a God given capacity to serve God in specific ways that will build up the body of Christ, fulfill one’s relationship with Christ, and contribute to Christ’s mission. In many local churches is found a wonderful collection of people brought together by the leadership of the Holy Spirit to know and serve God. The whole concept of a church is focused on fellowship, partnership, and opportunities to combine efforts to know God better and serve him through shared efforts where the whole body is stronger, and the ministry is more effective in discovering and accomplishing his will. It is a beautiful concept to consider that the people seated in worship are so diverse in many ways but so essential to one another through the identification and use of their God given spiritual gifts. They are teachers, high tech experts, farmers, shop owners, school children, youth, carpenters, mechanics, rich, poor, the racially and ethnically diverse, all types of temperaments, backgrounds, and experiences, yet in each of these who are saved by God’s grace, he has invested spiritual gifts to use for building up the body of Christ. All these people represent the riches of the church in discovering and experiencing the abundant life Christ has offered. If these could only identify, understand, and contribute the spiritual gifts God has entrusted to them it would revolutionize the church and there would be no stopping the growth, excitement, and fulfillment that Christians would experience.
