From the emphasis made in many churches, few Christians are fully aware of the continuous life-threating tension between Jesus and the rulers of the synagogues and the temple. Nor are they aware of how seriously this persecution continued through the growth of the early church. In fact, the overwhelming victory in the growth of the early church causes many to diminish the reality of the opposition constantly bombarding the early Christians. The words of Paul to the young pastor Timothy are seldom mentioned in churches or taken as a reality in modern days. “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived.” (II Timothy 3:12) The church seems not to be asking why she is not being persecuted by government, society, or internal opposition in the face of Jesus and his church being persecuted during all his ministry. (The gospels and Acts) The “feel good” worship in many churches today shows little signs of people sharing the gospel with all groups of people with a burden such as Jesus had when he wept over the lostness of Jerusalem, beginning with the lost religious leaders! (Luke 19:41) Indeed, if religious leaders are not burdened for the mission assignment of Christ for them to lead his followers in seeking the salvation of the lost and training them as disciples; it is an overwhelming issue about which the church today should weep!
