As timeless creator of all things, determiner of life’s purpose, sustainer of life, and final judge over all his creation, what Jesus believed and taught about hell is the ultimate and final truth about it. If we believe in Christ as our Savior and Lord, we must acknowledge his belief about hell. This is a systematic study to examine his teachings about hell and how his disciples supported his beliefs in their writings. Over seventy scriptures are considered. Jesus spoke and taught more about hell than anyone in the scriptures. The gospel writers made his views clear as it was included in twenty-eight passages in major teaching occasions. Other terminology is also used pointing to hell without using one of the specific terms. The other New Testament writers accepted his teachings and focused on sharing the gospel but consistently warned every one of the consequences of sin. Jesus made twice the references to hell as Paul did and they are followed by Peter, James, Jude, the writer of Hebrews and The Revelation. This study also includes associated terms referring to hell. The simple goal is to clarify the teachings of Christ related to hell as a balance to the disastrous belief that everyone who dies goes to a better place. Regardless of anyone’s definition of hell, the vocabulary of Christ and his followers in describing it are meant to awaken mankind to its reality. Modern churches mention hell in preaching or teaching less and less to the point that many church members tend to live as if there are no consequences to their sins, especially sins of omission such as failing to bring lost people to salvation. There are modern churches claiming to be Christian will not even use the word “sin.” Some preachers are only in the comforting business even to the point of comforting people in their lost condition!
